Certified Industrial Hygienist

Most people have never heard of a certified industrial hygienist (CIH) and if they have, they aren't really sure exactly what one does. Think of a CIH as a protector of human health. Certified Industrial Hygienists work in various factories, warehouses, offices and public places making sure that the building is safe for both workers and for the public. Some of the duties of a CIH include:

・ Recognizing health hazards
・ Test environment for those hazards
・ Determine if there is a risk to human health and recommend controls or means to protect the health of the workers and give those recommendations to the proper people.

This is a highly technical field and a CIH must be able to recognize hazards from a wide variety of sources including physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic stressors. People who choose to work in this field are highly committed to health and safety of homes, communities, and work environments and are willing to go through the training that is necessary to become a part of this very special group of people.

Training

Training to become a certified industrial hygienists takes years and begins with a Bachelor of science degree in one of the scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, and physics or an engineering degree. Other degrees may be acceptable providing there is a focus on mathematics, science, or science related technology. You then take special courses addressing industrial hygiene, toxicology, fundamentals, and controls.

Once you complete the education portion of your training you must then spend several years working under a CIH gaining real life knowledge of how to apply the concepts you have learned. Once you have a few years of basic experience working in the field you may then sit for the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam. Exams are offered every spring and fall at set examination sites.

Once you receive your certificate you have to maintain your certificate by continuing your education. There are a variety of ways to do this including sitting on committees, attending additional classes and conferences, teaching and even mentoring.

CIHs make an average salary of about $75,000 which is not a lot money considering the number of years that are required in order for you to get your certification. However, becoming a CIH allows you to work all over the world doing a job that really makes a huge difference in people's lives. Which is one of the primary reasons that people are drawn to this career choice.

While this is certainly not the job for everyone it can be rewarding for those who have the dedication and perseverance to become Certified Industrial Hygienist.
